DAC is some kind of weekly character design contest on DeviantArt. I’ve taken part in this challenge for some weeks, last summer (2010).

style challenge - Chris Sanders

In this contest-series you will get a different task every week, such as creating characters out of various shapes or based on a theme and then creating its opposite or other unusual stuff. The contest to create a character in the art style of Chris Sanders was one of the hardest up until now. It was really very difficult for me to try to keep his style and not returning to my own….. and well … I think I’ve missed the tasks and DID my own style but it was fun to try anyway…

While it was really challenging to create some stuff after those different tasks, it was also very interesting to look at the pictures, the other users on DeviantArt cam up with. Sometimes others got a similar idea then oneself and sometimes it was really great to see what else people could do with those shape tasks for example. So it’s really sad that I haven’t got the time to do this more often…

Odosketch is a project of odopod. It’s some kind of digital canvas you can use on the website.

“Odosketch seeks to recreate the decidedly non-digital experience of working with a sketchbook. Its papery textures, variety of brushes and intentional imperfections make you forget you’re working on a screen.” [from the website]

That’s true because it’s often hard to get the brush to draw at that exact place that you want it to. But somehow that makes the charm of this project even bigger. It’s really great to grab some ideas by doodling around on the platform.

There’s also the possibility to re-watch your drawing process with the playback feature. I LOVE to watch the drawing again also in between because I can think about the picture and what’s still missing more efficiently. It’s also fun to watch the pics of others and how they’ve started.

Sometimes I just miss the “return step” possibility but as they want to have a realistic sketchbook I think this is necessary. There are also some featured sketches on the main page. And lucky me I’ve also got 2 times chosen for a featuring. I was very happy realising it although this means nothing special.

This is a dark portrait after a photograph my friend took last winter during a band practice in a small studio in Berlin. I liked the lighting conditions a lot so I’ve started to draw a picture out of it.

At first I only wanted to draw the boy and his guitar but now I’ve ended up drawing also the surrounding quiet in detail because I think it fits the atmosphere very well.

For the final piece of work I’ve also added some textures in the hope to make the scene more realistic.

A new digital portrait I did in just one day. I was in the mood for it so I searched on DeviantArt for a stock image of a cute girl. And because she was looking up I decided that something needs to be on her head. So I looked again for a good stock image and I’ve chosen a red bird.

She looks a little too much like a Barbie I think now but it’s still ok I hope

digital drawing: the sailing trip

At first, I wanted to draw an other portrait but it turned out that I got a landscape scenery picture
and so I was drawing that one instead

After I finished the picture like it was on the photography, I thought that it was looking like the two
boys are watching something on the water. First I tried some spacy alien something but after some
other bad ideas the gold fish came into my mind. I like goldfishes because I had 2 of them when I was
very little (about 3 years old).

I think the picture finally turned out quiet nice.

I have started with digital portraits lately.

Alexander Rybak was one of the first I draw. I used a picture from a Norwegian talk-show interview as a basis. I don’t know whether I really captured his smiling.

As I was coming into the mood to draw portraits, I searched for a nice picture in the big collection of deviantart. I found a great black and white photography of a young woman and draw the following picture.

And this drawing was made after a picture we took at the prom of those two girls.
I liked the light atmosphere of the background and tried to include it also in my picture.

Berlin Zoo bear

After I tried two realistic digital portraits in the last months, I now wanted to draw an animal.
I think it turned out quiet good. And as I still have plenty of pictures from my last visit at the
Zoo Berlin, there surely will be some more animal paintings in the future.

It was really fun to draw the bear, although I feel a little pitty for him. The keeper was telling
us that he is ill. So I hope he got better already.

At the moment I want to draw flamingos the most but I also have a cute pic from a little
elephant while he get’s washed. Can’t decide where to start

more colored old sketches

After I found meagos tutorials last month, I’ve now colored some more sketches.

This are some little pet sketches. I was drawing them on different papers and in the corners of some study works.

This is a really fast doodle I did after I made a wrong answer in a lesson, I think. I often started to doodle after I made a mistake.

Imaginism contest winning

Two artists of the Imaginism Studios hold an art contest, about 2 month ago, at DeviantArt.
“Bobby & Kei’s Art Contest!”

Luckily, I got one of the winning entrys.
I took part with two pictures: Costumed Figure Got A Boy and Eye Candy Girls

Finally “Eye Candy Girls” were chosen as one of the winners. I also uploaded a Making Of to DeviantArt.

As a price, I got the book “Guy Sketches” from Bobby Chiu. It arrived this saturday. They even added a personal note on the inside:

This was fun. Maybe I should enter more contests in the future.
